Move your recipes from Paprika to Tomato Potato

Tomato Potato opens a recipe file exported from Paprika Recipe Manager (a file that ends in .paprikarecipes) and adds its recipes to your Book. Read the free-plan rule first, because it decides how many recipes come in at once.

What is free

Free includes three saved imports. A Paprika file saves its first new recipe and uses one of the three. The rest of that file waits behind the subscription screen, and if you subscribe from there, the remaining recipes in the same file are saved. If the three free imports are already used, the subscription screen opens first and nothing is saved until you subscribe. A subscription is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US, and the yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. A file that holds a single recipe saves that recipe and uses one free import.

Export from Paprika

  1. In Paprika, export your recipes in the Paprika format, which produces a .paprikarecipes file. Paprika's own guides give the steps: on a Mac it is File, then Export; on iPhone and Android it is Settings, then Export Recipes. Menu names can differ between Paprika versions, so follow Paprika's guide for yours: Mac, iPhone, Android.
  2. Move the file to the phone that has Tomato Potato, so it shows up in Files on iPhone or in your files app on Android.

Open it in Tomato Potato

  1. Open Tomato Potato and go to the Book tab.
  2. Tap the three dots (More) beside the gear, then tap Import from another recipe app. The line under it reads "Brings in a recipe file exported from Paprika Recipe Manager." The same button is in Settings, under On this phone.
  3. Pick the .paprikarecipes file. On Android the picker lists every file, so pick the one that ends in .paprikarecipes; Tomato Potato says so if the file is another type.
  4. Wait for the count. Tomato Potato reports what it did, for example "Imported 1 recipe." with "Skipped 1 already in your book." and, on the free plan, "2 more from this file need a subscription."

You can also open the file straight from Files or the share sheet and choose Tomato Potato. It goes through the same import and the same free-plan rule.

What comes across

For each recipe Tomato Potato reads the title, ingredients, directions, servings, prep and cook times, source link, categories (kept as tags) and photo. A recipe's description and notes are added to its steps when that text is not already there. A recipe's photo is copied into the app.

A recipe is skipped when your Book already has one with the same title and source link, or the same Paprika ID, so importing the same file twice does not make copies. A file that holds a single recipe (.paprikarecipe) opens the same way. If the app says the file is too large, export fewer recipes at a time and try again.

Then plan the week

Put imported recipes on days in Plan, then tap Shop these days. Shop builds one grocery list with shared ingredients added together and grouped by aisle. See a worked three-dinner plan.

Tomato Potato is free to download. Free includes three saved imports and one Kroger or King Soopers cart. The plan, the list and store searches stay free. A subscription removes both limits for $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US, and the yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. Recipes stay on your phone.
