How to turn a week of recipes into one grocery list

Cooking four recipes in a week usually means four ingredient lists with onions, garlic and stock on most of them. Tomato Potato builds one list from the recipes you plan, adds up the ingredients they share and sorts the result by aisle.

Steps

  1. Save the recipes you want to cook. A link, a photo or pasted text all work (see how to save recipes).
  2. Open Plan and add recipes to the days you will cook them. Set the servings on each recipe; the amounts on the list scale with them.
  3. Open Shop and build the list from the plan. Two recipes that each call for 1 onion become 2 onions.
  4. Switch Shop to By type and items are grouped by type in store order, starting with produce.
  5. On a recipe, tick the ingredients you already have and tap Shop; only the rest goes on the list. After a shop, Move bought items to the kitchen from Shop's menu.

Shopping with someone else

From Shop's menu, Share opens your phone's share sheet with the list as plain text, so the other person can read it in any messaging app. If they have Tomato Potato, pasting the shared list adds the items to their Shop list.

Ordering online

At Kroger or King Soopers the list can fill your cart (see how the Kroger cart works). At Walmart, Target, Instacart and 16 more US stores, each item opens as a search on that store's site. Kroger and King Soopers carts and the store searches are for US stores. Turn on France in Settings to get seven French store searches on the same sheet instead.

Price

Tomato Potato is free to download. Free includes three saved imports (one in versions before 1.1.3) and one Kroger or King Soopers cart. The plan, the list and store searches stay free. A subscription removes both limits for $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US, and the yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. Recipes stay on your phone.
