Privacy
Updated 2026-10-01. This is the privacy policy for the Pencils Up: Trivia Night app and the join and TV web pages at pencilsup.scrollingisevil.com. Pencils Up is made by Scrolling Is Evil LLC. Questions go to support@scrollingisevil.com.
What the app keeps on your phone
- The night in progress: the pack, the round and question you are on, the team names, scores, the answers teams typed, and the marks you gave. It is saved to one file in the app's own storage so a call or a dead battery does not lose the night. A save older than 12 hours is not offered, and the file is deleted when the night ends.
- Settings: the timer length, which packs you have already run, and when your subscription was last confirmed to run until.
- Weekly packs you have downloaded, so a night runs without a signal. These are the questions, not anything about you.
There is no account and no sign-in. The app does not ask for your name, email, location, contacts, camera, microphone, or photos. The QR code in the lobby is drawn by the app for players to scan with their own camera; the app does not scan anything.
What the room server holds
When you start a night with players joining from their phones, the app asks our server (a Cloudflare Worker at pencilsup.scrollingisevil.com) for a four-character room code. While the room is open the server stores:
- The room code, the title of the pack you are running, and a host token that lets your phone control the room
- The team names players type (1 to 24 characters), a random ID for each team's browser, and the current question, round, and standings
- Each answer a team submits (up to 80 characters) and the marks the host gives
The correct answer is sent to players and the TV only when the host reveals it. The server deletes the room and everything in it 12 hours after its last activity. Team names and answers are visible to the host, to the other players in the room (team names and standings), and to anyone who opens the room's TV page with the code. Do not put your real name or contact details in a team name.
Player and TV web pages
A player opens a link such as pencilsup.scrollingisevil.com/j/K7QM in a phone browser. The page stores one random ID in the browser's local storage so a refresh puts the player back on the same team. It uses no cookies and no account. The pages load the Archivo font from Google Fonts, so Google receives a request when a page opens; see Google's privacy policy.
Requests and logs
Cloudflare runs the server. Like any web server, it sees the IP address, browser, and address requested for each request, and Cloudflare's request logs may keep them for a limited time. We use the IP address to limit how many rooms one address can create per hour and how fast room codes can be tried, so people cannot scan for open rooms. The rate-limit counter holds a count only and is deleted within about two hours. Downloading weekly packs sends the same technical details and nothing about you.
Purchases
Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play) takes payment. We never see your card or store account details. The app uses RevenueCat to check whether your subscription is active. We also use the purchase record in RevenueCat's reports in our developer account to count subscriptions, renewals and cancellations. When the app opens it asks RevenueCat for your purchase status and the plan prices, and when you subscribe or restore, the store's record of the purchase goes to RevenueCat. These requests use an anonymous ID that RevenueCat's code creates on your phone; it is not tied to your name, email, or any account. RevenueCat also receives the technical details that come with any network request, such as IP address, device model, operating system and app version, and store country. RevenueCat never receives team names, answers, or anything from a night. RevenueCat's policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy.
Sharing and printing
Share with another host opens your phone's share sheet with a short message and a link. The text goes only to the app or person you pick. Print questions and sheets sends a PDF of a pack's questions, answers, and blank team answer sheets to your phone's print or share screen. Neither includes team names or answers players typed.
What we do not do
The app has no separate analytics, crash-reporting, or advertising SDK (the subscription reports above come from RevenueCat's purchase record), and it does not read an advertising identifier. We do not sell or share personal data, and there are no ads.
Children
Pencils Up is made for adults who host trivia nights at venues. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think we have, email us and we will delete what we hold.
Deleting your data
Room data deletes itself 12 hours after last activity. The night saved on your phone is deleted when the night ends; deleting the app removes it too. To ask us to delete the purchase record RevenueCat holds, email support@scrollingisevil.com with the purchase date and the order number from Apple's or Google's receipt email.
If this policy changes, the new text is posted at this address with a new date.
